WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

You may be thinking of purchasing a refillable cylinder for your caravan or motorhome which might cost you more than £100.00. (The actual cost of a brand new standard 11kg empty cylinder without any valve would cost around £20.00) You will also need a fitting kit, hoses and adaptors for use outside the UK for permanant installation in your caravan or motorhome. As you will see from the document below there has to be in place a system of continuous cylinder inspection and a certificated and qualified company to carry out refurbishment work on them. Likewise, companies filling cylinders have to adhere to strict codes of practice and Health & Safety procedures, it is for this reason the HSE in the UK are opposed to cylinders being filled at service stations, unless they conform to certain criteria, as station staff have not been trained to do so. In law under The Dangerous Substances & Explosive Atmospheres Regulations, plus The Carriage Of Dangerous Goods and Use Of Transportable Pressure Equipment Regulations they may be held responsible should any incident occur. Minutes of the HSE Petroleum Enforcement Liaison Group meeting on July 7th 2005 stated "PLA's should consider issuing prohibition notices if any inspector discovers a site allowing the public to fill cylinders".
